This is a wonderful initiative between the 2 schools. Having co-lead a PYP workshop at Global Jaya and been looked after so well by staff there I'm sure Liz will have a wonderful time. I look forward to reading her Blog during the following weeks.
When a staff member from Global Jaya comes to Melbourne I would love to know and catch up with them.
All the best with this exchange.

We look forward to this first visit being a building block towards ongoing collaboration and learning between our two schools.

Allison from Sekolah Global Jaya here:
Thanks Robyn for the tips you sent me so that I could set this blog up. Very easy indeed!!
Will definitely let you know when SGJ sends teachers to Melbourne....perhaps you can help me find another PYP school they could visit for one day when we work out dates with Chris at St Leonards...any ideas??
Hi there to all staff at St Leonards and SGJ too. We hope you look at this blog to keep you informed of the experiences that Liz has, whilst visiting us here at SGJ next week.
Looking forward to this exchange program being a informative, collaborative and sucessful program for staff and students at both schools!!
The sky is the limit so let's start implementing ways that our students can collaborate on UOI's together to broaden their perspectives.
This program will allow for such accessible collaboration between the staff and students at the two schools. I look forward to seeing and hearing more!

Hi everyone
The children in our class (ELC) are beginning to realise the exciting adventure that awaits Liz and they have made a short list for her to check off on her travels.
They would like her to see a volcano, a komodo dragon, an
orang-utan and have a chance to go to a market. (Already it is obvious how the exchange of ideas is a chance to broaden our understanding educationally and culturally)
We hope she has lots of fun and as Juliette, one of our students added, 'learns lots and lots.'
Hey Allison,
how are you getting the word out about this blog??
As you can imagine, we get a lot of "IB hits" on the folios webpage - would you like us to add a link to your blog?
I assume the schools involved have links on their Intranets?!

A great initiative. Truly living out the learning community of the IBO.
This is agreat model to many schools and I hope it grows from this point on.
It also relates directly to my work in Schools to Schools and may promote teacher exchanges between schools.
Congratulations to all involved.

Hi
we are the children of the ELC at St Leonards. We hope Liz is having fun. Jacob wanted to know if there has been a chance to go to a market yet? The notion of bartering has intrigued the group and Olivia was dissapointed she was unable to barter at the market she went to on Sunday.Sofie wanted to know if the weather is sunny as we are inside today due to rain. She also hopes Liz has made some friends in Jakarta.
From Helen and the children of ELCB
St Leonards
Hi everyone in ELCB. Thanks for your questions! Sofie, it is very hot but not sunny, the sky is overcast today and looks smoggy. The ELC children all went for a swim this morning in their outdoor pool. I have made lots of friends, all the children are very welcoming. I read a story this morning and we talked about Australian animals, they were intrigued with the wombat.Jacob, I haven't been to a market yet, I think that is planned for Friday but I went out for lunch today, it was rice and vegetables and was wrapped in brown paper, it cost 80 cents. The children have many things in common with you: they were playing superheroes this morning, shops and building with lego, but some of their classes are in another language: berhasa Indonesian.
Ms Bawden
Hi Liz,
Your colleagues in the ELC enjoy reading your communications each day from SGJ and we are sharing them with the children and families in the Early Learning Centre.
Susie Harris
Director ELC
St Leonard's College
Hi Liz
The children were very excited to hear your news and so many questions were asked.Thomas S wanted to know why you were speaking another language and why you went to swimming so early. The notion of it being cloudy and hot was strange to the children though they could recall days a bit like that in Summer.Hannahs (O and R )
would like to know if you like the food and if the children there eat things that are different to us.Toshi wanted to know if you can get bread in Jakarta.Max wanted to know if you had been able to locate a volcano yet and Giorgio wanted to let you know he is now the big, big brother in his family . He has a baby brother called Julien. We would like to know how they celebrate babies being born in Indonesia. Mia would like to tell your new friends that she knows about a wombat that lived under the mail box . He liked poking out his head when the sunset came and he dug big holes with his claws.
We spoke of trying new foods and new adventures and the children agreed you were an inspiring risk taker.
Looking forward to our next installment

Hi Liz,children and staff
In reference to your student's questions about the things we like the ELC children replied...
Our favourite books are Peter Pan, The Princess and the Pauper, Pooh Bear, Bananas in Pyjamas, The Incredibles and Mrs R's favourite was Yertle the Turtle by Dr Seuss.
Our favourite foods are apples, bananas, fish and chips, nachos, pasta and chicken, ice cream, rock melon and chips.
The children thought about their classroom. They were not sure if they needed to describe the physical surroundings but they thought a special aspect of their day was the sharing of things with their parents. Isabella's Daddy had just finished helping the class with the P.M.P. program and she said "I love it when my Daddy can come and play here too"
We enjoyed the photos and thought Liz would have really liked the dancing in the classroom. Sienna was very keen to let you know we had been singing a Koori dreamtime song and discussing Australian animals, provoked by your question about wombats.
Keep the questions coming, the children wait eagerly in the morning for their 'news'.

Dear Helen and ELCB,
Dear ElC,
You have so many questions....you are real inquirers!!
We want to answer one of your questions as it is a really interesting one in Indonesia.
Giorgio talked about having a new baby brother...
In Batawi (an area in Indonesia) there is a celebration when a woman is 7 months pregnant.
If the baby is a girl the community have to sacrifice a goat, 2 goats if it is a boy and can afford it. The family distribute the goat meat to the underpriveleged and relatives..this is a muslim religious celebration. The goat must be eaten within one day.
For muslim babies they have a 'hair cutting' celebration which is similar to a baptism where the baby's name is announced. A packet of food is given at this ceremony (curried goat).
Hope this helps you.
Ibu Juni and Pak Joni (we are visiting your school mid November and will come and talk more about this then)
Ibu Jan here
It has been a two way learning process for us here. Thank you Ibu Liz for sharing the philosophy of Reggio Emilia with us at our Tuesday early years meeting - the dvd of children at work and play was appreciated by both staff and students.
Ibu Liz haS been immersed in Indonesian way of life at school and after school - shopping is the national pastime in Indonesia!!!!! I'm not saying any more on that.
Ibu Liz has experienced so many different snapshots of life at SGJ and on reflection that is SGJ.
Thank you Ibu Liz for being flexible and participating in our day to day life.
( Ibu Jan, that's me used to work in Queensland and now I am the expat teacher for kindy and reception here )
Dear Ibu Juni and Pak Joni
Thankyou for the insights into celebrations in Indonesia. We thought both ideas of sharing food and cutting hair was very interesting. The children were also interested in celebrations such as birthdays. We usually have cake and gifts and sing though not everyone celebrates the same way in Australia.
Helen and the children of ELCB
Hi ELCB children,
It is nearly holiday time for you there, have a great holiday. I have so many things to show you when I return and a lot of photos. Today all the children in the Junior school presented me with a gift, traditional dress, and I gave them a book about Melbourne with a lot of photos so they can see what your community looks like.
The children here have enjoyed all you comments and questions,
Ms Bawden.
Hi ELCB,
Yesterday we celebrated a birthday in the kindergarten class. The cake was incredible: a beautiful pink cake with fairy tale character dolls on top, the cake the shape of a castle. The children sang Happy Birthady in English, just like you and clapped to 4 and blew out candles. The cake was cut and then some friends were chosen to sing their favourite song to her.
All the staff were then given a special lunch in a container from her parents of rice and chicken. They have parties at home like you do too.
Ms Bawden
Thankyou staff and children of Sekolah Global Jaya.
We are about to leave on our holidays and we have really enjoyed your ideas and information. You have given us a glimpse of some of the different aspects of your program and we will learn more when Liz returns. She has obviously had a wonderful time.
We look forward to sharing more ideas in the future.
