Internationalism - Day 3

An inspiring start to the morning:one of the agama, (religious teachers) delighted children and staff alike with his traditional Balinese dance. The enchanting Balinese music played in the background as his dance retold a traditional story. The children were being exposed to aspects of the Hindu culture, despite having no Hindu children in this particular class. As the children watched, sitting quietly, I could see them getting more anxious to join in. As they were invited to have a go, there were sounds of laughter as they attempted the intricate movements. The agama teacher spoke in Bahasa Indonesian and invited questions from the children. This class is beginning How we express ourselves UOI. The Indonesian teacher explained the dance to me and said it was important for the children to keep their culture and be proud of it, we have planned games, food, songs, language and looking at the map.

The reception class has some questions for the ELC or prep children:
1. What are you your favourite books?
2.What are your favourite foods?
3.What is in your classroom?

Dear Helen and ELCB,

You have so many questions....you are real inquirers!!

We want to answer one of your questions as it is a really interesting one in Indonesia.

Giorgio talked about having a new baby brother...

In Batawi (an area in Indonesia) there is a celebration when a woman is 7 months pregnant.

If the baby is a girl the community have to sacrifice a goat, 2 goats if it is a boy and can afford it. The family distribute the goat meat to the underpriveleged and relatives..this is a muslim religious celebration. The goat must be eaten within one day.
For muslim babies they have a 'hair cutting' celebration which is similar to a baptism where the baby's name is announced. A packet of food is given at this ceremony (curried goat).

Hope this helps you.
Ibu Juni and Pak Joni (we are visiting your school mid November and will come and talk more about this then)
