As PYP coordinator, it was our pleasure to have such an 'open-minded','respectful','enthusiastic'and 'caring' representative from St Leonards to come and visit our school, and to share ideas and experiences .
The teacher exchange program idea came about from a discussion I had with Chris McNamara at the PYP coord conference in Perth earlier this year. Thanks Chris for being such a great partner in coordinating this program.
I have just attended the PYP workshop leader training in Chiang Mai, Thailand and hope to one day lead a PYP workshop (perhaps with Chris @ St Leonards??) for your dedicated and innovative staff. Many staff at the PYP training this week, were impressed that we have opened up this opportunity for staff, and were very keen to find out more....and to also become part of the program in the future!
I am looking forward to continuing this collaboration between both schools - opening up opportunities for both staff and students to form a valueable and meaningful partnership so that significant and engaging learning will take place for our students to become global citizens!!
Wishing all of St Leonards staff a restul, relaxing and safe holiday.
Looking forward to hearing the questions your staff and students ask when you return back to school.
Best wishes, Allison (PYP coord,Grade 4 teacher) pyp_coord@globaljaya.com
Hello students at SGJ! The students in ELC 4 here at St Leonard's, were interested in the photo of the children at Muslim parayer time and have some questions we were hoping you could answer. Olivia asked: Why are they in different clothes? Izabella asked: Why are they sitting on carpets? Jacob asked: Do they put their hands together and put their head down? Mrs R asked: Do the girls ever sit in the front?
Hello again..More questions! we have just had a look at a book about celebrations around the world and saw that it is Eid ul-Fitr. Max asked: Who has to fast? Do children at school have to? Juliette: Why do you have a feast in the night? Thank you, Children in ELCB.
Idul Fitri is one of the celebration in Indonesia. Only moslem people celebrate this. Before the celebration moslem people, adult and children, need to fast. It is not a must for the children who haven't reach 11 or 12 years old. It will be a must if they have got their first eriod. During fasting month , at night time, we do prayer called taraweh. It can be done at home or in a mosque. after 30 days fasting, we celebrate idul fitri. People visit each other and ask forgiveness. I hope my explanation will give clear view.
Hi Ibu Juni, Thank you for answering our questions. Our children are worried about how hungry you must get but were very interested in your response. We look forward to asking you some more questions soon. Regards, Ibu Liz. St Leonard's College.
We have to wear different clothes because we have to cover certain parts of our body during prayers (for girls and women,we called the different clothes "mukena" and we have to wear it on top of our outfits). We musn't show our hair, hands or legs. "Mukena" has become a custom to us here in Indonesia. I've been to many countries and I've seen how the moslems prayed there, and they didn't wear "mukena" since they've worn veil and proper clothes. And the girls and women never sit in the front as long as men and boys are there (we let the lead,it's a must!!) but we can sit in front when they (men and boys) aren't there. I hope that answer your questions...bye
