Day4 Student Led Conferences

Hi to everyone,
7:00am
Time is slowly drawing to a close. I can't believe how much I have managed to fit into such a short period. Spent yesterday nursing a gurgly tummy. Nothing that kept me from doing things, but I just felt out of sorts and ate very little.
Global Jay had a small farewell assembly for me where they presented me with the most beautiful Indonesian batik. I read Wombat Stew to the children with the help of a few year 6's using the puppets. Chris McNamara would have been proud! The students just loved it and were chanting the rhyme by the end of the story. They really are the most gorgeuos bunch of children. Each morning I am greeted with "selamat pagi Ibu Jane", "good morning Ibu Jane". As with children all over the world, they love learning, they love their friends, they love their teachers(!), they love chatting, they love games and they love new challenges. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of their school lives. We all agree here that one week is much too short!
Preparation for SLC were well underway yesterday with staff working at a frantic pace to complete corrections, put up displays and tidy rooms. It reminded me of Open Night!
Went to a night market with Ibu Mida, Ibu Juni and Ibu Dewi, David and Carmel. It was actually a collection of stalls set up between the shops inside a huge shopping centre. There were cars and people everywhere with plenty of things to see and buy. Not feeling the greatest, I was a little overwhelmed by the options available to me and didn't see anything that jumped out saying "Buy me, buy me!" Consequently, my wallet stayed in my pocket. My Indonsesian friends chose Italian for dinner and shared a pizza and garlic bread. I drank iced tea.
8:30am
SLC's are now well on the way and the children are all engrossed in sharing their learning with their parents. The atmoshphere in and around the rooms is one of total focus and commitment to the purpose of being there. It's a sheer delight to observe!
Will be sitting down with Ibu Mida and Ibu Kathryn this afternoon to go through their documentation, gathering ideas that will be useful to us at StLeonard's. A quiet night at home is planned for this evening. Well at this stage anyway! So long for now.

Greetings from St. Leonard's to you Jane. What a wonderful time you are having, making the most of every minute as you always do. It has been fascinating reading your entires and hearing about the school and you have obviously shared a great deal. it will be interesting to see what the staff thought of the thinking skills scope and sequence and how they enjoyed using the PMI's and Thinkers Keys.
Itis nearly the end of the day and after the meeting I'll be off to put the cats in the catery ect before heading to the airport. We will, not doubt, have wonderful experiences as you have and seeing another culture is always fantastic and a great learning experience. It will be hot and I'm glad we have a couple of days to get used to the weather before the conference starts.

Continue to enjoy it all and have a safe trip back - we'll have lots of experiences to share when we get back and I'll look forward to catching up then.
love Carolyn

Dear Jane,
Wow! How exciting! Please say hello to all the Year 5 students at SGJ from me, Ibu Anne. We were your penpals, the ones who sent you letters last year.
I do hope you enjoy your stay in Jakarta. What a wonderful team of staff and students there at SGJ. They really are quite remarkable.

Hi there Jane,

It has been fantastic to read all about the things you have been doing. Your students have also enjoyed getting onto the computers and sending you messages.

Things at St Leonard's are slowly winding down. All the staff are looking forward to 3.20 tomorrow when we can set off on holidays. It's hard to believe that a whole week has gone past and your nearly on your way home.

It sounds like the SLC's were interesting. I hope you took some great photos and notes to share with us. Did they do anything exciting that we can try?

I am glad that you are enjoying yourself. Please remember to come home . . . enjoy your holidays! Please thank all the staff for their assistance in making your stay a great one. Please pass on a special thanks to Ibu Mida for her assistance in organising the exchange at her end.

See you next term!

Dear Ibu Jane,
Thank you for keeping in touch via the blog. Your entries have been very interesting and have given the students, and staff, at St Leonard's more insight into what life in another school, another culture is like.
Hope you get to prayer time tomorrow to see how well SGJ promote true open mindedness amongst their school community, a wonderful experience to be part of.
Please say hello to the staff from me and we will be in touch, keeping our connection going,
Liz Bawden-Nixon

Hi Jane,
How quickly this week has gone by, you must be feeling the same too! It's been wonderful hearing all about your fantastic experiences and lovely to read your unique style of story telling! I am so pleased it has been a rewarding learning experience and a culturally enjoyable and stimulating week. It is fabulous to know that children wherever they are have that universal quality of being themselves.
4L have been their awesome selves and Nina has really enjoyed her time in your room.
I hope you have a safe trip home and a relaxing and restful time in Byron Bay.
Take care, love
Amanda
